Sykes, who has been «n » business visit to tjie Dominion, leaves New Plymouth to-morrow on his return to Australia. 7 Mr. Henry Homes, a former resident of New Plymouth and a member of the Armed Constabulary, paid a week-end visit to New Plymouth after an absence of over 30 years, during which he has been resident in Carterton. The death in Sydney of Mrs. E. J. Gravestock, wife of Mr. E. J. Gravestock, a well-known concert manager who has sponsored many musical celebrities through New Zealand, was reported in private advice received in Wellington yesterday, states the Press Association. Messrs. C. G. C. Denner, G. H. Bell and H. Moreland, members of the classification committee of tho New Zealand Jersey Breeders’ Association, who have been visiting stud farms in different parts of the North Island during the past two or three weeks, inspected a number of herds in North Taranaki yesterday. Miss Ada Eastwood,’M.A., first assistant at the Palmerston North Girls’ High School, has been appointed principal of the Southland Girls’ High School in place of Miss A. M. Samuel, who has resigned to take charge of the Avonside Girls’ High School, Christchurch, the Press Association reports from Invercargill. There were applicants for the position.

Mr. R. Bridge, manager of the Blenheim branch of the Bank of New. South. Wales, has received notice of his transfer on pi-omotion to the management of the Hastings branch in succession to Mr. H. F. Malfroy, who has been transferred to Sydney. Mr. Bridge went to Blenheim two. and a-half years ago from Kawakawa.

The death of Miss Harriet Stewart, who is believed to have been the first woman to receive a university arts degree in the British Empire, is announced in a Reuter message from Regina, Saskatchewan. Miss Stewart, who was in her 90th year, took her degree of B.A. in 1882, and her M.A. in 1884, at the Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick.

Dr. A. Tennyson Howie, a house surgeon at Auckland hospital, has been ordained as a Presbyterian medical missionary. for China, and has been appointed to the Presbyterian Mission Hospital at Kong Chuen, China. He is replacing Dr. C. E. North, who had to retire on account of ill-health. Dr.' Howie was educated at. the Southland Boys’ High School and Otago Medical School, where he was for some time demonstrator in anatomy. Before leaving for China early in January he will be married to Miss E. L. Seamer, daughter of Rev. A. J.. Seamer, superintendent of Methodist Maori missions.

Mr. W. G. Riddell, ex-senior ■stipendiary magistrate at Wellington, has been appointed by the Government to the position of chairman of the Board of Appeal under the Cinematograph Films Act. The position was formerly filled by the late Mr. H. M. Gore. In announcing Mr. Riddell’s appointment the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. A. Hamilton, stated that the Films Appeal Board, which is set up to deal with appeals made by picture proprietors from decisions of the censor, consisted of a chairman aud two members, representing the picture and social welfare interests respectively. The two last-named appointments were held by Mrs. Florence Righton and Mrs. Preston.

Sir John Roberts, C.M.G., announced at the annual meeting of the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand, Ltd., held last week, that on sceount of advancing years he had decided to retire from the board of the company at the end of the current year. Although Sir John Roberts has decided to take this step on account of his age, ha is enjoying excellent health. Ho joined the board of the company in 1903, and has acted as deputy chairman since January -0, 1914. Sir John Roberts is one of New Zealand’s most prominent eitisens. Ha has pastoral interests and is the senior partner of Murray, Roberts, and Company, which firm ho inaugurated in Dunedin in 1868. He was president of the New Zealand and South Sens Exhibition held in Dunedin in ISS9-90. Mayor of Dunedin, 1890. member of the University Council, ISSS-91. and since 1907, vicechancellor. 1913-21, and directors of several New Zealand companies, Ho was created C.M.G. in I SOI and received the honour of knighthood in 1920.
