MATAU PRIZE-GIVING
i FAREWELL TO TEACHER. ; The Matau branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union recently held a very successful plain and fancy dress ball for children. The hall committee allowed them the free use of the hall. The ladies supplied the supper and the men were charged a small amount each to defray the cost of the fruit, nuts and sweets. Mr. P. .Rolfe was master of ceremonies and Miss E. Foreman, Messrs. J. Moody, A. Smellie, R. Horsup and M. Jensen supplied the music for the dance. The chairman of the school committee, Mr. W. J- Rawlinson, distributed the’ school prizes, first congratulating the children on all having passed to a higher standard, especially those in the 6th standard, who had all gained theii proficiency certificates in spite of the stiffening of the examination. The prize-winners’ names are: Standard 6, Colin Rawlinson, Erik Eriksson, Ronald Rawlinson; standard 4, Robert Larsen, Iris McCoard, Lorna Edgecombe; standard 2, Bruce Rawlinson, Alex Rolfe, , Winifred McCoard, Norman Smith, Ella Mundy.; primer classes, Gordon Rawlinson, Aileen Horsup, Avis McCoard, Iris Evans, Dudley Smith. A special gardening prize donated by the teacher for the best-kept plot was won by Erik Eriksson. After the prize-giving Mrs. A. Rolfe stated how sorry the pupils and parents I were that Mr. Maingay was leaving the Matau school, although they were, glad that he had secured a higher position. The three years that Mr. Maingay had been teaching at Matau he had made himself very popular and the children had progressed splendidly under his capable tuition. on behalf of the pupils and cx-pupils in presenting the teacher with a goldmounted fountain pen and a pipe.. Iw of the youngest pupils of the schoo-, Gordon Rawlinson and Dudley Smith, gave Mr. Maingay his giftMrs. H. Larsen and Mr. W. J. Rawlinson also spoke, voicing the general regret of the district in losing a eOOtF friend and teacher. _ In replying Mr. Maingay said that now the time had come for lus departure from the school he was finding how hard it was to leave. “For He s a Jolly Good Fellow” was very heartily sung and cheers were given for Mr .Maingay. The children in fancy dress were. Melville Smith (Little Boy Blue), Adeen Horsup (Hawaiian Maid), Avis McCoard (Modern Licenses), Ins Evans (Blue Butterfly), Iris McCoard (Century Costume), Winifred McCoard (Spanish Senorita), Ella Mundy (Edmonds Baking Powder), Elva Chapman (R attl e), Gwitha McCoard (80-peep), Nola McCoard (Ribbon Fan), Thelma McCoard (Rainbow), Loma Edgecombe (Poppy), Bruce Horsup (Mexican Cowboy), Stanley Fairhurst (Sundowner).
