APPEALS FOR CHARITY
A GOVERNOR’S DECISION. ‘WILL NOT ACT AS BEGGAR.’* The Governor of Now South Wales, Sir Philip Game, declined to officially open the Rose Day celebrations in Sydney recently. Although Sir Philip-is in favour of the objects of* the appeal, he said he considered that it was quite superfluous to have an official opening. It was quite unnecessary; the public realised < the use to which the proceeds were to be put; and he wished it every eu«cess. “I am averse from acting the part of universal beggar,” proceeded Sir Philip. “At a time like the present it ia extremely difficult to continually _ ask people for money. If I opened this appeal I would be asked to act in a similar capacity for other appeals. I have decided not to l do so. “It is wrong for me to be begging continually,” the Governor added. He stated that appeals for money at the present time humiliated him.
