SHAW OPEN CHAMPION

DOMINION GOLF TOURNEY MACFARLANE THE RUNNER-UP. FIELD LEFT WELL BEHIND, By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. ■ A. J. Shaw won the open golf chant-. ’ pionship of New Zealand to-day with an aggregate 287, E. M. Macfarlane being second with 288. The weather was beautifully fine with a light north-east breeze and the standard of play, especially in the afternoon, was very high— , ; i probably better than on the opening day. > As expected, the championship developed into a duel between the" two leaders on the first day, Shaw and Mac- vG? farlane. Shaw began the day with a *-.‘j lead of four strokes but he met disaster on his morning round. He set out Z badly, duffed his first drive into a bunker and took five for an easy four hole. He went on without mishap, recording scratch figures until he came to the fifth hole (424 yards), where yt after two brilliant shots to the green, he took three putts to get down in. five. At the next hole he also took . three putts after being on the edge of the ... ■. green for two, and again at the 7th hole he missed a short putt for four. His score was 40 for the outward half of the round. ' At the 11th hole he met the worst disaster. Elis drive was wide and.to the '' > left and his second, an iron shot, ran. - through the green into an old forgotten drain. It was an almost unplayable lie ‘.l but he contrived to knock the ball :.g out to firm land again, eventually get- .. ting down in six. He missed putts <.J again at the next hole and at the 17th, but he made up in a measure for these by getting birdies 3 and 2 at the 14th. and 15th. His final score of 77 was highly creditable in view of the number ; s of his costly mistakes. MACFARLANE’S SOUND PLAY. •; V Macfarlane played another of his masterly rounds for 71- There is little to tell about his play except that it. A; was uniformly sound. Any player' who gets round the ’Shirley course in one under fours has to play remarkably good golf. This gave Macfarlane a lead of two strokes, and he and Shaw shared the gallery for the afternoon. Macfarlane went out in level fours, 'v. getting scratch figures everywhere except at one hole, where he took one less." Coming home he was not so fortunate. He missed birdies by the narrowest of margins at the 12th and 13th. . but took three putts on the easy 15th. y He dropped another shot by being short in his approach at the 17th, a holo which puzzled many players, and then narrowly missed a birdie three at th© last hole. He finished in 73. The excitement of the spectators fol- j:,-, lowing both players was increased when Vy. it was learned tzhat Shaw had gon© out in 34, wiping out Maefarlane’s midday lead of two strokes. Shaw sustained his form, recording par figures with uncanny precision in spite of a missed putt at the farthest south, th© one-shot 15th. He came home in 36, one. under the scratch score and one ov©r th© .£ course par. Playing to the last green . ,■> Shaw knew that he had to get down iu four to win. He drove an extra long ball straight for the green and chipped safely on. He was a little short with his : approach putt so that he had to sink a four-footer to win th© titla. Th© ball lingered on the lip of th© hole but <.’• went down and Shaw was once again open champion. ' None of the others ever looked like challenging the leaders. C. C. CUements played a very meritorious, four ' y rounds to gain third place, and Mclntosh, who had marred his. chances by ...y; a weak first round on Thursday, to-day showed his best form to finish fourth. Either of these two may extend Shaw jy in the match play of the professional championship. , •. ■_ ■
