ONLY TWO MORE FOR CAMP
POOR RESPONSE FROM SINGLE MEN
INVITATIONS SENT TO 79.
. Only two single men of 16 who attended the office of the Labour Department at New Plymouth yesterday said they were willing to go to the camp near Wanganui, Seven men having gone from the district on Tuesday, there still remained vacancies for 18 before the quota of t-6 was completed. The unemployment committee will probably not have sufficient money to provide work for single men in future. What steps will be taken to fill the balance of the quota are unknown. Perhaps an opportunity will be given South Taranaki single men to fill the vacancies.
Following the meeting of th© unemployment committee last Monday the secretary, sent notices to 79 men on the register inviting them to attend at the Labour Department yesterday with the object of filling thei camp quota for North Taranaki. Thirteen of them sent word, written or verbal, that they would be unable to go; some produced medical certificates in support of . tiieir statements, while others explained that they had found employment. Of the remaiuin : 66 receiving the. invitations only 16. visited the department’s office yesterday, With, the exception of two, all declined to go into camp.
