LAMBS FOR LONDON

SHIPMENT TO BEGIN SOON.

FAVOURABLE MARKET LIKELY.

Spring lambs are beginning to come on to the market in increasing numbers and are selling at very fair values at Westfield and other sales, says the New Zealand Herald. At present only local butchers are operating, but toward the end of the month overseas buyers will begin to enter'the field to secure lambs for the English market. The Christmas trade in London provides a good demand for early lambs and prices there, have always been profitable, particularly until the middle of January. As a rule the first shipments for London are despatched from Auckland during the first week in November. Before actively seeking supplies the representatives of Home buyers wait as long as possible until lambs come forward in sufficient numbers to bring prices here within their reach. At present values are over the heads of shippers, but within the next ten days or a fortnight the market will be more fully stocked, with prices easing to levels permitting of purchase for the London trade. There is every indication that lambs for export will be one of the bright features of th© present season. The opinion is held in most quarters that the export trade will in all probability bs a record one as far as lambs are concerned- There is always a firm demand for early lambs in London at from lOd to IOJd a lb until heavier shipments arrive from the middle of January onward, when values ease. Last year Auckland was fortunate in sending to England the first shipment of spring lambs and efforts are being. made to have local supplies again on this favourable footing.
