NUDE SUN WORSHIP

CULT REACHES AUSTRALIA. CLUB IN NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney, Sept. 25. The spread of the nudist cult in European countries, and in England, has led t' inquiries in New South Wales, which show that there is already a body of sun-worshippers in existence here, whose members indulge in sun-baking in the nude. z The Australian organisation is known as the Australian Health Club. It has been formed in one of the Sydney suburbs,-and although details of its activities are not generally announced, it has been established that, on a secluded, tree-lined beach on the South Coast, between Cronulla and Helensburg, members of both sexes, in the nude, have spent several week-ends lying in the sun performing • physical, exercises and gymnastics.’ An officer of the club said that about 20 men and women have taken part in the nude sun-bathing, had enjoyed it, and had induced many of their friends to join. More than 150 applications had been received in the metropolitan area since the first hint of the existence of the society was made public, but owing to obvious difficulties, the membership was being limited and carefully selected. Suggestions have been made that special areas should be set aside on the public beaches, where the club could build its own sheds, to accommodate the mixed sun-worshippers, away from the gaze of prudish persons who discountenance the practice. If this is impossible —and it seems to be—the club suggests establishing its sheds along the banks of a number of the rivers, where no offence would be given to anyone. Applications for membership have been received from girls of 17 and women of 40, but by far the greatest number come from men. One girl of 22 wrote:—“l would very much like to join your club, as I delight in the sun and cannot get endugh of it. I suffer from bronchitis, and I am satisfied that your club would show me the way to perfect health.” Another woman of 28 wrote:—“Your club is a splendid idea, provided you select your membership carefully. I would like to become a member, as I believe the nearer to Nature we get, the healthier we will be.” A woman' of 40 said: —“The fact that you are’ allowing complete nude bathing will allow members to get away from wrong and ignoble ideas on sex matters. It will make their minds cleaner and better.” So far, only, the ideas of the adherents of the cult ’• have been published. What the opposition thinks of the scheme would fill the newspapers'.
