RIVAL STRATEGY

SALVATION ARMY WINS. DEMONSTRATORS FRUSTRATED. The Salvation Army Band and the unemployed demonstrators who not infrequently share Quay .Street on Sunday afternoons while assembling for their respective missions, were jointly concerned on Sunday afternoon in a display of rival strategy, the humour of which, says the New Zealand Herald, was not entirely lost to spectators in the vicinity. Both organisations were due to march up Queen Street, the Salvationists to their citadel in Grey’s Avenue and the unemployed to the Domain, where speeches were to be made. Thinking to avail themselves of the services of the band and to borrow a touch of martial colour, tho demonstrators had planned to fall in behind the Army when tho band should strike up, and thus to add to tho impressiveness of what have been a drab march. But the Salvation Army had. learned of the scheme. In due time the band formed fours and stepped off from the vicinity of the Roller Mills, with the unemployed obediently following. However, instead of making the usual turn into Queen Street tho band continued on solemnly, and with no note of music, straight _ along Quay Street past. the Ferry Buildings and into Little Queen Street. Dumbfounded, the leaders of the Communist march found themselves being led astray, so left wheeled sadly into Queen Street to begin a lonely march. The Salvationists, successful with their coup, stepped in easy time through Little Queen Street, thence down Customs Street, to regain Queen Street, this time well in tho rear of the little procession of demonstrators with their banners bearing many strange devices.
