NEW LOCOMOTIVES
CONSTRUCTION WORK STARTS. ORDERS FOR MATERIALS PLACED. Work on the construction of the first batch of a new type of locomotive for use on the New Zealand railways has already commenced in the railway workshops, says the Wellington Dominion. The new-locomotive is designed to save a large proportion of the banking now necessary on various lines in the Dominion, and this in turn will mean better operating figures in train and engine mileage. The engine wheelbase will be 34ft 10m. The larger wheels are 4ft Gin in diameter and the working pressure of the boiler will be 2001 b per square inch. The locomotive is designed for a capacity 50 per cent, greater than that of units of the present “A. 8. class, and the tractive effort at 80 per cent, boiler pressure is calculated to bo 32.3751 b. The work so far undertaken is the completion of individual castings. A certain amount of raw materials will have to be imported, and orders have been placed for these, delivery of which ie expected in a few weeks’ time.
