HUGE LUMP OF AMBERGRIS
DISCOVERY INSIDE WHALE SAID TO WEIGH QUARTER TON. SOUTHLAND MEN’S GOOD FORTUNE By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. To have found what must be one of the largest lumps of ambergris on record was the experience of Messrs N. Beer, J. Martin and J. Pratt, of Riverton, who returned a few days ago after spending a week on the coast between Chalky Inlet and Dusky Sound. On a former trip the three men sighted a whale washed up at Cape Providence and, anticipating a find of ambergris inside the whale, they resolved to return. On opening the whale what it is stated is a quarter of a ton of ambergris was found, but it was a difficult task to carry the ambergris for three miles over the rough country to where the boat was moored. The whale was fully 70 feet long and 14 feet through and measured 20 feet across the tail.
