CRICKET IN STRATFORD

REVIEW OF PAST SEASON. ANNUAL REPORT OF CLUB. From a playing viewpoint the Strfft* ford Cricket Club had a very success-* ful year, and financially the position: is sound though not so robust as in th» previous year! The report to be presented at th® annual meeting to-night states that the club commenced the season with material at an estimated value of £2O 2s 6d and finished with materials of an estimated value of £2B 12s 3d. During the season, new materials and repairs cost £2B 14s sd. Offsetting this, some of the club’s material assets had been considerably written down in comparison with last year’s figures. Towards the end of the season a heavy outlay was occasioned by the necessity of purchasing new matting for the provincial final. This material, however, was a necessity, and should give the club good service for some years to come. The club’s liabilities were practically covered by the outstanding senior subscriptions, which were all certain to be paid. As the financial position of the club depended almost entirely upon the subscriptions received, the committee earnestly solicited the co-operation of members in the matter. In that respect it was noticeable that the junior members did not support the club us they should, as only four members of the junior team had paid their subscriptions for the past season. Whila desiring to do all that was possible to foster junior cricket, for the sake of the game, it must be evident that the club could not continue to run a junior team without the financial support of the individual members of that team. Some means of remedying that state of affairs would have to lie devised for the coming season. The Senior team had had a most successful season, winning the South Taranaki championship and drawing with Tarurutangi in the provincial final. Several members of the team gained South Taranaki representative honours, those being Messrs. Sandford, Hall, Dormer, Wilson, Donnelly and F. Young, while Messrs. Wilson and Donnelly were selected for the Taranaki team. The junior team played through th® season, and were to be congratulated on. being the runners-up in the South Taranaki junior competition. The thanks of the club were due to Messrs. J. Petrie junr., F. Pobrica, and Young for the donation of cups for batting, fielding and bowling. The cups were won by Messrs. Gatton, Hamilton and Sanford respectively. The prospects for the coming season were bright. There would be a considerable surplus of senior players, and the meeting would have to decide th® question of the club entering two senior teams in the competition.
