DEMONSTRATION FARM SOCIETY. MEETING OF STRATFORD BOARD. The regular monthly meeting of the Stratford Demonstration Farm Society was held on Tuesday last, there being present Alessrs. J. M. Smith (chairman), E. Alarfell, K. Tarrant, W. H. Were and A. H. R. Amess. Air. Alarfell reported that the work of the erection of the silos was progressing slowly. The matter of acquiring wheel-barrows and shovels for work on the silos was left in Air. Alarfell’s hands. It was resolved that slag requirements for the 1931-32 season be left in the hands of the secretary. The manager’s report for the period ended September 14, 1931, was read as follows:— “Pastures: This last week the paddocks are showing a little growth. No. 78, the nitrogen paddock, and No. 128, which have been closed for five weeks, had quite good feed on them, which is now being grazed day time only to keep going until other paddocks improve. Since grazing on these two paddocks the milk has gone lip 3501 b. in three days. No. 16 has been harrowed and is closed for harvesting. “Crops: The swedes and carrots have all been fed out. Two more days will finish the mangolds. The sheep have been on the crop paddock cleaning up rough feed ready for ploughing. Herd: Sixty cows are now being milked, and the milk weight to-day was 13601 b.; the last test was 4.4. New milk used for calves is 1001 b. daily. “Pigs: The three litters of 5, 7 and 9 are all doing well. The last sow to farrow is the one bought off Air. Marchant. The committee intended keeping the sows from her for breeding, but they were farrowed the morning it was snowing and they all died but one. Six of the pigs that were on trial were sold at the pig sale on September 5. “General: The herd are getting one load of ensilage and one of hay daily. IZiere is still three chains of the road boundary to plant with barberries. The plantation along the creek in No. 16 has been cleaned, and 50 gums planted where the others had died out. Sixty gums are needed to replace the remainder of the dead ones. Th 50 gums that have been planted were supplied by the High School. It was resolved that the matter of acquiring from 50 to 60 gum trees be left in the hands of Air. Marfell. The chairman submitted a report on the result of pig wintering trials between pine bran, meat meal and pollard.’ A discussion took place on the employment of unemployed men on construction of a road "giving access to the river, and was left in the hands of Mr. Alarfell and Air.
