GENERAL AND PERSONAL ITEMS. PUBLIC SOCIAL FUNCTIONS. A large number assembled in the Pukearuhe Hall last Friday, the occasion being a welcome home to Mr. and Mrs. Cummings, who were married during the school vacation. Mr. J. Lambert introduced Mrs. Cummings to those present and on behalf of the district wished Mr. and Mre. Cummings every success and happiness, in the future. Master Dick 'Purdie on behalf of . the parents and pupils presented Mr. and Mrs. Cummings with a silver tea service. Miss E. Baker presented Mrs. Cummings with ’ a bouquet. Vocal numbers, were sung by Mesdames S. Purdie and D. Scott and Mr. E. Heselton. Dancing was to music supplied by Messrs. N. Edwin (piano) and A. H. Martin (drums). Mr. A. H. Martin was master of ceremonies. Tho Urenui Football Club’s annual dance on Tuesday was vjell attended. Mr. F. Heqley (president). presented L. Herbert with Mr. R. Miller’s silver cup and Mrs. Miller’s trophy, (a silver cigarette case) for the most improved third grade player. The cup is to be held for 12 months. A competition for a dressed doll realised over £6, and was won by Miss Molly Elliot. Renton’s orchestra supplied the music, and Mr. C. Henwood was master of ceremonies. Tho Urenui Bowling Club green was top-dressed on Wednesday by Messrs. L. H. Sampson and W. R. Fuller, of the Waitara club. The green is in splendid condition this season, and providing the weather is suitable an early start is anticipated. The macrocarpa plantation on the Urenui beach had a narrow escape from destruction on Thursday afternoon. A resident who noticed fire in the vicinity of the plantation gave the alarm and in a very short time willing workers armed with slashers cut a fire break and had tho outbreak under control. The plantation, which was planted a few years ago, is making rapid progress, and is effectually destroying the gorse and blackberry. Mrs. Chapman, North Cape, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. R. Fitzgerald. Mr. A. Benge injured his eye while bushfelling on Mr. Newton’s farm. Mre. C. G. Dunbar, who has been staying at Waitoitoi, has returned to Hurleyvillc.
