GIBSON BOWL TO R. LEWIS F. PEPPERELL’S BLOOM CHAMPION. < DECORATIVE WORK A FEATURE. i j The ninth annual flower show of the i Kaponga Methodist Church was held yes,:terday and in spite of the past few days unfavourable weather, there was a -yery good display of blooms. The Gibson challenge! rose bowl for-(jm-ost points in daffodils was won by Mr. ;SR. Lewis, Eltham, who also • won the ijtrophy last year. The Hockin challenge :<hrp for-best twelve varieties was won Uy Mr. F. R. Pepperell, Eltham, who also -secured the award' for champion bloom nvith “Golden City.” With “white Nile” Lewis secured the reserve champion. -EThe exhibits of Mr. Pepperell and Mr. Lewis in the class for twelve. varieties jjvere an outstanding • feature of the section. JI The decorative work was exceptionally tgood and was much commended by the tjudge. The children’s work, which form;jed practically half of this section, was of a spacially high standard and Mrs. Lovell expressed great pleasure at the efforts in this. . direction. Several decorated saucers formed a striking exhibit and the decorated bowls Ipade a. bright display. JI The Swadling rose bowl for most joints in cut blooms was again won by lilrs. R. J. Morris. Mrs. N. C. Davies kvon the Morris rose bowl for most points in the decorative section, her Jjiecess of the previous year being repeated; The school shield 1 for most joints in the children’s section was again won by the Kapohga public school. !’ The Rev. J. R. Nelson, in asking Mr. (£. R. Anderson to open the show, said it was refreshing to turn from everyday affairs to admire the beauties of flowers and they could not afford, to forget that flowers and the cultivation «f flowers had-a refining influence.. Mr. Andersbn apologised for the absence of Mr.. C. A. Wilkinson and expressed pleasure at the invitation to take his place. He had been in. the district since 1886, when the whole place was standing bush, and it was evidence ■of great progress to find in one’s lifetime a change that had enabled them to make such a good display of flowers — the best of any of their shows. ■ Mr. Nelson extended thanks to the judges, stewards, secretary and all who had assisted. .Mr. •Corder- was specially mentioned for his assistance in arranging tho evening programme.
