SOCIAL AND SCHOOL ACTIVITIES.

The Oakura euchre tournaments held on Saturday evenings have proved a great success. Originally the women challenged the men, the idea evidently being to decide who was ‘ the bettei half,” but the men triumphantly demonstrated that in cards at any rate they could more than hold their own. In the return match there was a-like result. Nothing daunted, however, the women challenged the men to “play the conqueror,” and their pluck was rewarded by a victory by 68 games to 52. A fourth match has been arranged for September 5. During the week-ends, the youth of the district have gathered at the Oakura school for football practice. The team have played two friendly games with the town warehousemen the scores so far being one-all. The Tuesday euchre parties have been very popular and well-attended ‘this season. Last Tuesday’ was tone of the best evenings so far, 25. tables being occupied. After supper dancing was carried on till about 2 a.m. The Oakura school committee held a meeting on Saturday night, there being present Messrs. Knapman (chairman), Morris (secretary), Mace, Smith and Corbett. The head teacher reported a roll number of s*l and a monthly average attendance of 43.6, .which was considered quite good considering that there is still a stray diphtheria germ about the district. It was decided to see to the clearing of the tennis court, the school fences, the planting of trees along the roadway and other matters requiring attention. The pupils of the Oakura school recently gave a “penny con in aid of Red Cross funds. A stall, where homemade sweets were for sal'"was speedily cleared. A sum of 29 shillings was made, and this amount, together with: a .few shillings jn hand, was forwarded, to the Red Cross secretary. Master Walter Drake was “on the door” and Master Harry Corbett announced the items and thanked the parents and friends who had assembled for their attendance. The items were given without any delay, and. with evident enjoyment by the children. The audience showed their appreciation of the various' items by hearty laughter and applause.
