The New Zealand team consisted of Lowry, Dempster, Matheson, Weir, Vivian, Mills, Cromb, Page, Kerr, Merritt and Talbot, and the Essex side of Pope, Eastman, Crabtree, O’Connor, Bray, Nicholls, Franklin, Wykes, Sheffield, Daer and Smith. Lowry won the toss and Dempster and Weir gave New Zealand a good start before the latter was beaten by Nicholls. One for 81. Dempster stepped out to Smith and was bowled by a shooter when he appeared set for a century. He gave a typically steady exhibition of scoring shots all round the wicket. He batted 177 minutes and hit seven fours and a magnificent straight drive for six off Eastman. Lowry and' Talbot added 144 for the sixth wicket in 100 minutes. Talbot played a fine and steady innings, leaving the captain to force the pace. He was caught in the outfield when one .short of the half-century. Lowry gave a brilliant display of studied aggression. He hit with extraordinary power. His .cover drives were ,excellent. He was caught right on the fine leg boundary from the short bail from Nicholls. He batted 151 minutes and hit 13 fours. The Essex bowling was never dangerous. Nicholte kept a steady length.
