The New Zealand team consisted of Lowry, Dempster, Matheson, Weir, Vivian, Mills, Cromb, Page, Kerr, Merritt and Talbot, and the Essex side of Pope, Eastman, Crabtree, O’Connor, Bray, Nicholls, Franklin, Wykes, Sheffield, Daer and Smith. Lowry won the toss and Dempster and Weir gave New Zealand a good start before the latter was beaten by Nicholls. One for 81.
