PERRY SUFFERS FIRST DEFEAT.
SUCCESS OF ENGLISHWOMEN. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Red. 5.5 p.m. New York, Aug. 22. The English tennis player F. J. Perry was defeated for the first time in the present United States campaign when he lost to Vines (U.S.A.) in the singles final of’ the Newport casino invitation tournament to-day. The score was G—2, C —l, 6—B, 6—2. Vines and Giedhill won the doubles by defeating Doeg and Lott (U.S.A.) 3—6, G—3, 5—7, G—3, I—6, G—4. In the quarter-finals Perryan Hughes defeated Wood and Shields 4 —6, 9 —7, 6 —B. 6—l, 6—2. In the semi-finals Vines and Giedhill defeated Tidball and Stolfen B—6, 6—4, 6 —2; Docg and Lott defeated Perry and Hughes 5—7, 6—4, 5—7, 6—4, 6—4. Miss Dorothy Round (England) paired with Miss Helen Jacobs (U.S.A.), eliminated Miss Mudford and Mrs. Shepherd Barron (England; 6—2, 9—7, to
qualify for the doubles final of the women’s national championships at Forest Hills. The final will be- played on Monday owing to the fact that Miss Round, who is a minister’s daughter, refuses to play on Sunday. ’Mrs. Whittingstall and Miss Nuthall reached the finals by defeating Miss Josephine Cruiekshank and Mrs. Van Ryn (U.S.A.) 6—3, 6—2. *Mra. Whittingstall (England) entered 'the singles final ‘by defeating Miss Betty Nuthall (England) 6—2, 3—6, 6 —4. Mrs. Helen Wills-Moody (U.S.A.) is the other finalist, she having defeated Miss Mudford (England) 6 —2, 6—4. The final is to be played to-morrow. In the singles quarter finals Mrs. Whittingstall provided an upset by deua .g Miss Helen Jacobs (U.S.A.) 3—6, 6 —3, B—6.- Miss Mudford defeated Mrs. Harper (U.S.A.) 4 —6, 6—3, 6 —2.
