GENERAL AND PERSONAL. The financial report for the four months ending July 31, 1931, presented to the Town Board meeting on Tuesday showed that the receipts for that period totalled £2033 8s sd, as against £2169 5s Id for the same period in 1930. Expenditure for the four months totalled £2873 10s 2d, while that for 1930 was £3563. Receipts to the general account for the period were approximately £lOO above those for 1930, and the expenditure for 1931 showed a similar increase over that for the same period in 1930. The electricity account showed a decrease of £5O in receipts while the expenditure decreased about £6OO. The bank overdraft at the end of the period was approximately £350 below that for the same period in 1930.

The question of rates for the current year were discussed at the last meeting of the Kaponga Town Board, when it°was decided, subject to confirmation at a special meeting of the board on September 9, to fix rates for 1931-32 as follows: General rate, in the £; street lighting rate, 3-8 d in the £; special water and drainage loan rate, 7-8 d in the £; special town district loan rate, 3-Sd in the £; special electricity loan rate, Jd in the £. Owing to the Town Hall being engaged with the dairy company annual meeting the weekly Red Cross classes were held at the Methodist parsonage on Wednesday evening, when there was a fair attendance. Instructive lectures were given by DiV'J. L R.-Gray and Mr. W. R. Shaw, of the Hawera branch of St. John’s Ambulance.

Mrs. H. Gallagher has gone to Fcilding to attend the funeral of her father, Mr. G. J. Harford, who died at Eltham on Tuesday. Mrs. Phil Harding, also a daughter, is staying with her sister, Mrs. Parker, at Eltham. Mr. S. I. Saddler, Bell Block, is on a brief visit to Kaponga. Mr. A. R. Bates is on a business visit to Wellington. Playing at the Kaponga- State school grounds on Thursday, a team of girls from the Kapuni school met and defeats ed the Kaponga school girls’ basketball team by 8 goals to 5. Kaponga schoolboys visited Kapuni on Tuesday and played a friendly Rugby match. In an exciting game the° Kapuni team won by 21 to 5. The score does not indicate the nature of the game because Shaw (Kapuni) scored all the 21 points for his side. Shaw was far too big for the Kaponga boys to handle and his weight carried him through. For Kaponga. Jack McCook scored and converted his .own try. The second cycle race of the season to be held under the auspices of the Kaponga Cycle Club took place on Thursday. The course was around the Mangawhero block, about 11 miles, and the race was run in fine weather with no .wind. Following were the starters and then’ handicaps: R. Hosie scr., D. Coleman £min., G- Williams Ijmin., J. McGlinchey, L. Valski 2Jmin., J. Hosie Simin., Ti Stockman 4-Jmin. The winner was J. Hosie, who finished about half a minute ahead of Stockman, with Volsky third. The fastest time was made by the scratch man, R. Hosie, who did the journey in 33min. 35sec. The winner’s time was 34Jmin. and the second man’s 37mix;. 23sec. The scratch man finished fourth alter running Coleman ( Jmin.) to half a-wheel. The next'race is" set down for Thursday next, when the course will be round the Mangawhero block.
