RATES ON VACANT HOUSE
BOROUGH COUNCIL MUST REFUND.
DECISION IN WELLINGTON CASE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The refund of £l4 5s 4d, being half the rates paid in respect to two unoccupied houses at Eastborne, was ordered by Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court today when he delivered judgment in favour of J, R. E. Bennett, who claimed to recover that amount from the Eastbourne Borough Council under Section 69 of the Rating Act, 1925. Mr. Page said the Act provided that where any dwelling house or other building remained actually vacant and unoccupied for not less than six months in. any rating year and the owner gave notice to the local authority he would be liable to pay only one half of - the amount of the year’s rates.
