In addition to the insurrection raging in the north, Communism is rampant in the interior and the south, and China is now faced with a famine throughout the greater part of the country owing to the worst floods in history ruining rice crops. Dykes, canals and rivers are overflowing, with serious loss of life. Hankow lias been converted into a Venice.. The only mode of transport in the city’s streets is in sampans. There are enormous financial losses. The British steamer Buenho was held up by pirates at Chinkiang. They ransacked the vessel, taking 50,000 dollars worth of opium from the coal bunkers. The passengers were not molested.
