A mincing machine that has become slightly blunt can be sharpened by ■simply passing a P' icce of bath-brick through it. .... If scissors require tightening, press a red-hot poker on each side of the rivet. This causes the rivet to expand, and tightens the scissors. A leaking casserole can be remedied by filling it with a mixture of peaflour and water, which should be left to simmer very gently for several hours. The 'flour gets into the cracks and stops the leakage. „ ~,. A very simple remedy for a rattling door is to glue to it a piece of cork of the exact thickness to make the door

fit firmly when closed. If the cork is painted the same colour it will not be noticeable. A torn blind or casement curtain can be mended as follows: Dip a piece of the same material into hot starch, place it .over the tear, and press with a hot iron. This makes a much neater job than a sewn patch. In making paste for household use, it is a good plan to add a teaspoonful' of powdered alum to the mixture of boiled flour and water. The paste keeps -good twice as long and is more than twice as strong as when made without the alum.

When melting glue for mending wood work that is likely to get wet, use linseed oil in the inner gluepot instead of water, as this will make the glue entirely damp-proof. A good cement for china is white oil paint, bought in the tube from an artist’s colourmail. ’ Spread the paint /Jong the broken pieces, press the edges close-

ly together, and bind them if possible. The mended article should not be touched again for six weeks, when it will, if necessary, stand the action of hot water. ALFONSO’S DAUGHTER. WEDDING IN PARIS. The marriage of King Alfonso’s daughter, the Infanta Beatriz, to Prince Alvaro of Bourbon-Orleans, will take place in October in Paris (states the Daily . Mail). The ceremony will be held at the villa of the Prince’s grandmother, the Infanta Eulalie. Princess Beatriz, who is well known in London, is just 22, and Prince Alvaro is 21. She is an excellent horsewoman and has hunted in this country, while ■Prince Alvaro is a keen airman and has been studying engineering. Since the proclamation of the Republic in Spain Princess Beatriz and her sister have taken shorthand and typewriting lessons so that they could assist their father and mother with their correspondence. The family are living at Fontainebleau, near Paris. The Princess is also a qualified nurse, and within a week of obtaining her diploma she was present professionally at a major operation in Madrid.
