TARANAKI HUNT CLUB BALL

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION AT WAIHI. An outstanding .success was the Taranaki Hunt Club’s ball on Thursday evening, and had the Waihi Memorial Hall been twice as large the dancing area would still have been full. Two hundred couples attended the function, visitors coming from as far as Awakino and Hawera. After supper the supperroom was converted into an extra dancing chamber. The hall was transformed into a colourful bower with a fluttering canopy of blue and pink streamers, which scintillated in the warm glow of the shaded lights. The colour scheme was toned by the artistically arranged greenery around the walls and the sombre green was softened by vividly red streamer flowers. The bright red waistcoats and the hunting attire of many members of the Taranaki Hunt Club struck a predominant note. Boulton’s Dance Band contributed materially to the success of the function with a delightful medley of hunting, old-time and modern airs. To cater for such a crowd, which necessitated three sitting? at supper, the ladies of the Hunt Club and their willing band of helpers worked assiduously. Among them were Mesdames J. Cole, P. Cole, Honeyficld, Parli, Rackley Robertson, McKay, Davidson, Draper aad Miss Honeyfield. The venerable -Master of the Hunt Club, Dlr. A. H. Halcombe, congratulated the organisers of the ball on its unqualified' -success. In thanking the farming community of the district for the privilege given hunting over their properties he said the whole-hearted support given to the club would enable it to carry on through the difficult times. He then called upon Mrs. W. T. Hook'ham to present the following trophies won at the Point-to-pOint Steeplechase: Maiden Hunters’ Steeplechase, C. Rumiball’s Record Reign and J. Stanton’s Karangawai, dead heat. Tally-ho Steeplechase, R. Topless’ Michael Shimose. Heavyweight Hunters’ Steeplechase, Miss Hazel Cole’s Nimblefoot. Lightweight Hunters’ Steeplechase, C. Rumball’s Record Reign. Senior Boys’ Steeplechase, Master E. Cole’s Nimblefoot. Junior Boys’ Steeplechase, Master H. Taiaki’s Tinopai. Ladies’ Steeplechase (Mr. Tippens’ Cup), Miss Tracy Cole’s Michael Shimose.

Consolation Steeplechase, I. Cole’s Parakura.

Hunting honours were accorded the winners and Mr. Ben Tippens, who announced he would give a. cup for the Ladies’ Steeplechase as long as he was alive.

During the evening extras were played by Miss Olive Stevens and Messrs N. Edwin and J. Buckley. Deputy-Mas-ter W. T. Joll and Messrs P. Rackley and R. L. Powell acted as masters of ceremonies, while Messrs J. McKenzie and C Honeyfield, the joint secretaries, filled their difficult position creditably.
