Dr. Pauline Witlierow is, fiUtes a Press Association, cablegram from London, the first New Zealander to gain a diploma in bacteriology. Tho national executive of the Labour Party has endorsed the selection of Mr. John Gilchrist aS nominee for the Dunedin West seat, states a Press Association message.
The Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, continues to make entirely satisfactory progress towards recovery, states a Press Association telegram sent from Wellington last night. His Excellency has been confined to his room through arterial trouble. The funei’al of Geoffrey Frank Evans, second son of Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Evans, Carrington Road, Vogeltown, took place yesterday at To Henui ceinotery, the Rev. Fordham Clarko officiating. There was a large attendance, including representatives of the Vogeltown School Committee and of the Vogeltown Bowlim>- Club, of which organisations Mr. A. C.° Evans is secretary, the proprietor of the Taranaki Herald, Mr. W. C. Weston, fellow members of the staff of that paper and representatives from the Daily News. Many beautiful wreaths were scut.
Mr. B. C. A. McCabe, chief draughtsman of the Lauds and Survey Department, New Plymouth, was farewelled on Thursday afternoon by the staff of the office and the Land Board on the occasion of his transfer on promotion to Invercargill to the position of Cotnniissioiier of Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor for the Southland Land District. Mr. McCabe has been attached to the Taranaki staff for eight years, during which he has carried out extensive surveys and latterly held the position of chief draughtsman. On behalf of the staff Mr. W. D. Armit, Commissioner of Crown Lands, presented Mr. McCabe with a travelling rug arid expressed good wishes and congratulations to the departing officer, who had earned the esteem and goodwill of all with whom he had been associated. Mr. C. J. Ryan on behalf of the Land Board spoke of the good qualities of Mr. McCabe and wished him success in his new sphere.
