VALUELESS CHEQUES
WOMAN ADMITS OFFENCES.
HUSBAND ALSO CHARGED.
Arrested at Te Awamutu last week on a false pretences charge, . Thomas Kelly, middle-aged, and his wife, Mary Kelly, aged 46, appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court at Auckland on Wednesday. They were represented by Mr. Aekins. The woman, who was charged first, pleaded guilty to obtaining from Vivii.% Archibald Crichton, a motor-car valued at £5O, by means of a valueless cheque. The offence was committed in Auckland on May 19. She also admitted passing a worthless cheque in Wanganui on June 24 and thereby obtaining Is 6d and three bottles of liquor. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said accused came from Scotland with her husband in 1925 and they made their home in Taranaki. About a month ago the couple started a tour of the country, leaving a trail of worthless cheques behind them. They agreed to purchase a motor-car in Auckland and paid for it by one of their cheques. ‘Wljile in Wanganui the woman deposited £6 in a bank and deliberately issued several cheques in excess of that amount. Accused was remanded for a week for sentence. Thomas Kelly , wafi then charged with
obtaining sundry articles and money by means of eight valueless cheques, The total amount involved was over £lOO. Accused was remanded for a week at the request of the probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell.
