He is almost certain to start in the Grand National Hurdles mid he must be respected on a firm track. Is Amorist Amiss? * Amorist failed to complete the course in the Winter Hurdles, being pulled up less than a mile from home after suddenly beginning to drift from the good position he had held for the first mile and a-half- Up to that point he had made'a much better showing than in the Trentham Hurdles. The Stud Book. In the course of his address at the annual meeting of the Racing Conf err ence at Wellington on Thursday, the president. Mr. O. S. Watkins, said that volume XI. of the New Zealand Stud Book 'was published shortly after the last annual meeting, he regretted to sav that the sales of the Stud Book were very poor indeed. The edition whs limited to 400 copies, and of the 95 racing and hunt clubs registered ’ under the-New Zealand Rules of Racing, only 27 had seen fit to order copies of the latest volume of the Stud Book. He considered it ivas essential for every registered racing or hunt club to possess a complete set of the 11 published volumes of the N.Z. Stud Book. It would probably surprise them to learn that of the 1200 and more breeders of thoroughbred horses in New Zealand not 150 had deemed it necessary to purchase the last published edition o.’ that indispensable work of reference. The keeper of the Stud Book had drawn attention to the disappointment of many people who purchased fillies and mares with the idea of breeding from them, only to find after returning their foaling? to the keeper, that the animals purchased were not eligible for entry in the New Zealand Stud Book-. The executive committee was submitting for approval a set of regulations dealing with the responsibilities of breeders and studmasters in connection with the notification of the foqlinge and coverings of thoroughbred mares, which he strongly urged them to adopt in the interests of . all ' concerned. At this stage he wished to call attention of the breeders in New Zealand to societies which had been established in other countries, and would recommend the formation of a similar society in this Dominion to protect their interests. The growing demand for New Zealandbred horses warranted breeders following the procedure adopted in other countries, viz.: That no horses other than thoroughbreds were offered at the recognised annual sales of yearlings.
