VICTORIA LEAGUE "AT HOME.”
DICKENS SKETCHES PRESENTED. Thfc ViCtofia League held an “At Home” in the league rooms at New Flymouth on AJoiiday evening, when the programme of clltertainment Was provided by the league play-reading circle, Hie members of which presented in very entertaining fashion three sketches from the works of Charles Dickens. The parts Were well east and the reading waft well done. Additional interest was giVeft to the reading by the dressing of tliS Women characters iftethe cofetumes of the period. The first sketch xvas froffi AliehblaS Nickftlby, and represented the. scene between Airs. Nickelby and the Mad Old Gentleman. The part of Airs. Nickelby was excellently read by Airs. J, H. Slieat, while Aliss G. Jeiuispft Wft.ft cast irt the pftrt of Kate, the. daughter, the ReV. Fordhani Clark in the part pF tile itad Old Gentleman, and Mr. H. W. Instil) fts Hie Keeper. Tlio next scene was the w-ooing by Mr. Jingle Of the spinster, Aliss Wardle, from Pickwick Papers. The parts Were again Well -taken “y the fqliowing ntemtiers: Aliss F. Broad (Alts. Wardle), MisS Simpson (Aliss Wardle, the spinster), Air. C. B. Smith (Air. Wardle,, her brother), Air. J. Redman (Tracey Tupman), Mr. E. W. Robhis (Mr. Jingle), Dr. Afecfedy (Pet'ker, a solicitor), and Mr. J. H. Slieat (the Fat Boy). Th® final scene was a . very oinv6t presentation of tlie quarrel between Sairoy Gamp and Betsey Frig, with the parts allotted (jspectively to Aliss W. Wise and Airs. W. J. Reid. This proved pftrhaps the most popular part Of the entertainment. There was a very large attendance iftd at the cmicliisioii of the readings Ute thanks of the audience were expressed to the members of the Circle by Alr.J. Henry. Those present Were the guests Of the league council at supper
