FAINTING WOMEN HANGED
TRAGIC SCENE AT GALLOWS POISONINGS IN ROUMANIA REFUSAL TO GIVE REPRIEVE SPECTATORS HORRIFIED By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Budapest, June 18. Bursting into tears, the hangman at the Szoiinok Prison was compelled to drag to the gallows the unconscious bodies of Julian Czartas and Marie Czabo, who were convicted of wholesale poisoning. It was stated earlier that they were sitting, in their prison cell, in which wireless was installed, when they heard the announcement that they were to be hanged. Both women collapsed. Attempts to secure a reprieve were futile. Czabo bore a child while in prison and fainted at the sight of the gallows. She did not hear the final sentence.
Czartas, protesting her innocence, madly fighting the warders and shrieking for mercy, was carried to the gallons, where a screen hid the body of Czabo, who had already been hanged. Czartas then fainted. The spectators were horror-stricken as the hangman, weeping bitterly, adjusted the noose and, while Czartas was still unconscious, completed the execution.
