COMPETITION JUDGING CONTINUES TWO MANAIA SCHOOLS VISITED. The judging of the South Taranaki schools root crop competitions was continued yesterday, when the judges, Messis. R. Syme and J. W. Palmer, visited Manaia. The heaviest crop of mangolds yet weighed was that of Willie Lawson, whose crop weighed 99 tons. The judges were entertained at tea by Mrs. Lawson. Details are: — MANAIA. An old timers’ ball will (be held at To Roti on Monday, June 29. The Hawera Municipal Band has held two Sunday night concerts in a Hawera theatre in aid of the unemployed, but as each of these has resulted in a financial loss no more will be held. Open air concerts will be substituted. The collection consisted of 82 threepences, 46 sixpences, 17 shillings, one florin and 54d in copper, although there was a good house with a full dress circle.

The medical superintendent, Dr. W. T. Simmons, reported yesterday to the Patea Hospital Board that there were 25 patients in the institution as against x-J last month. i

Another of the popular Kapuni dances will be held this evening, when the programme will be composed largely of fox-trots, with a series of Monte Carlo dances. Wills’ orchestra and free 'buses will convey patrons from Hawera, Stratford, Kaponga and Manaia.

The fortnightly euchre tourneys at Kapuni were continued oh Monday night, when the prize-winners were: Mr. J. Graham I, Mr. W. Gatenby 2; Mrs. R. Harrison 1, Mrs. H. Whalen 2.

The resignation of Sister Proffitts was received with regret by the Patea Hospital Board yesterday and appreciation of her services was placed on record

At the annual meeting of the Patea County Council yesterday Cr. W. G. Belton was re-elected chairman.

The “Swanee Minstrels,” comprising a number of well-known Stratford entertainers, have been practising for a series of entertainments in aid of worthy objects. Kaponga will be the venue for the first production on June 18.
