PATEA COUNTY AFFAIRS

INCREASE IN SUBSIDY GRANTED. MANAWAPOU BRIDGE WORK. At the annual meeting of the Patea County Council yesterday the chairman, Cr. W. G. Belton; thanked members for the support they had given him during the year and the staff for the capable manner in which they had carried out their duties. Last year had been the biggest as far as work wag concerned in the county's history. The ratepayer:, he wag sure, considered that their interests had been adequately looked after. When the Highways Board had been in Patea the council had asked for assistance in shouldering work and as a result the subsidy had been increased from £2 for £1 to £3 for £l. That was most gr-tifying. The ordinary monthly meeting was also held. The engineer was given permission to take levels for improving the playing fields of the Patea school. engin er stated that he proposed using relief labour in improving the visibility at the Manawapou bridge. The bitumen might be widened with advantage. There were other points more dangerous on the road, and there was little excuse for a collision. The chairman pointed out that on a £2 for £1 subsidy basis the shoulder work on the main road would have cost the council £833, but with the rate of subsidy increased to £3 for £1 this would be reduced to £625. He suggested that extra shoulder work be done with this amount. This was agreed to.

The engineer, Mr. L. F. Rowe, reported that the contract for repairs to T ,in’e; track and. the erection of t)ie e spenision bridge had been completed. Repairs to the abutments of the Stony creek bridge and repairs to two culverts near Ngamatapouri had been carried out during the month. The shell rock metalline of the Ruao section of the Lower Valley Road was completed. The grant metalling on the Wereweraonga Road was completed and a section of Beach Road near the Waitotara railway station had been metalled. The section of road between the Waitotara Hotel and the school had been repaired and. new hi.lai laid where necessary. A section of new metalling had (been laid on the KoJii Road. The deviation on the Tower Road was practically coin-, pleted and would be metalled at an early date. The decking of- the Otautu bridge had been repaired and new deck plank<s had also been fitted on the Patea bridge. Two sections of metalling had been completed on the Kakaramea Road, and a section of Pearce’s Road was being metalled with local pit metal. The°Upper Taumaha Road had been repaired between the main road and the railway. ' The steep hill on the Manutahi Beach Road was being re-graded and widened by relief labour. The widening on the main road between Waverley racecourse and the Whenuakura hill was completed. Those present were: Crs. W. G. Belton (chairman), R. J. Watt, W. H. Watkins, J. Lupton, R. G.
