LEAD ON FIRST INNINGS

NEW ZEALAND CRICKETER? MATCH AGAINST SOMERSET TALBOT BATS WELL FOR COUNTY LOSING WICKETS By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. London, June 8. The New Zealand cricketers ecored 255 rune against Somerset and thus have i lead of 14 runs on the first innings, the county side being dismissed for 241. In the second innings Somerset had made 99 with the loss of six wickets when stumps were drawn for the day. The match was continued to-day in fine weather. The wicket was somewhat difficult owing to rain overnight. Talbot attacked the bowling vigorously and added 51 to his overnight score in 50 minutes, hitting three sixes and four fours. It was a fine display of clean hitting, and the innings was invaluable to his side. Vivian went out l.b.w. second ball, but Blunt batted very steadily, it having become apparent that the New Zealanders would have to fight hard for a first innings lead. Blunt put on 54 more slowly than usual. Page was run out in curious fashion. He snicked a ball and overbalanced, and before he had regained the crease the wicket-keeper had whipped off the bails. The later batsmen lacked enterprise and when the ninth wicket fell 11 runs were still needed for the lead. Weir patiently watched White at one end, allowing Janies to finally place New Zealand ahead. White bowled 50 overs, 18 being maidens. Sornerset batted for 110 minutes, and a- one stage it seemed that the whole side might b. out before stumps were drawn. Weir bowled remarkably well, keeping a flawless length and swinging away. He had at one time taken three wickets for 5 runs in 12 overs. A timely stand b.y Earle and Case added 56 for the sixth wicket. Case was bowled by Page in the last over. Weir sent down 22 overs, including eight maidens, without a change. Details:— NEW ZEALAND. In view of the opinion that the selection of the English test team against New Zealand should mainly have an eye to finding young blood to recapture the Ashes from Australia, it is understood that the following have been chosen against New Zealand :— Jardine (captain). Peebles. Sutcliffe. Hammond. Larwood. Ames. Verity. Bakewell. Probably the Cambridge captain, Kemp-Welch. Everyone accepts Verity as a successor to the wily Rhodes, while the dashing young Bakewell is regarded as a Hobbs partner for Sutcliffe.
