WRESTLING AT HAWERA

INTERESTING AMATEUR BOUTS.

BERT BAILEY BEATS D. TITO.

The progress made by amateur wrestling in South Taranaki was illustrated last night when a tournament was held in the Hawera football gymnasium in aid of the gymnasium funds. A fair attendance was treated to a number of interesting bouts. In the star bout Bert Bailey (11.1) and D. Tito (11.4) wrestled a draw, each securing, a fall. After some fast mat work Tito got a full splits which Bailey had some difficulty in breaking. Bailey threw his opponent several times and prevented him from working into a Japanese wrist lock. Bailey had a leg scissors and toe hold early in the second round but’could not hold the Maori who countered with a wrist lock. Tito had a punishing head scissors and a double arm hold at the gong. Bailey re-opened hostilities with head locks, Tito bridging cleverly to avoid a fall. The latter after securing short arm scissors failed in an effort to get his opponent in the toils of a toe hold. Bailey had Tito in trouble in the fourth round with a toe hold and again with body scissors, the grip being neatly slipped. Bailey aroused applause with a good escape from an arm scissors and arm lock, almost immediately gaining a submission fall by the jarring application of head and arm scissors. Bailey again demonstrated skill in breaking from leg scissors and double arm hold and a hammer-lock, but Tito was not to be denied, making Bailey submit with body press, arm lock and arm scissors. With a fall each both men tried hard in the sixth and final round but could not wrest the honours. A touch of the spectacular came when Bailey tossed his man with a flying tackle but he was too late in following up his advantage. Christensen (5.8) and Walsdorf (5.2) drew, no falls being secured. Everetts (6.2) and Christensen 6.4) also drew. Everetts secured a fall in the second round ■with body scissors and an arm lock. Christensen equalised with a body press in the third round. S. Fama (10.12) beat G. Ngaia (11.2) by a fall obtained with a body press obtained in the first round.

F. Quin beat O. Quin (both 11.4) by a shoulder press in the second round. L. Symes (9.12) beat H. Jackson (9.7) by two straight falls. He secured the first with a body press in the opening round and the second with a headlock and a body press in the next session. Clem. Blair (11.12) beat L. Walters (11.2) with a body press in the third round. Mr. W. J. Claringbold was referee.
