EGMONT COUNTY ROADS

REVIEW BY THE CHAIRMAN. A SATISFACTORY POSITION. At the annual meeting of the Egmont County Council yesterday the chairman, Mr. W. C. Green, briefly reviewed the progress waich had been made in reading the county. Ke said their tarred roads, especially the South Road, were equal to any in Taranaki. They had spent £05,000 on their tarred roads, and of this amount £45,000 had been received by way of subsidies. Nearly all the bridges in the county had been renewed or rebuilt at an expenditure of about £25,000, and of this £12,000 had been received in subsidies. There was sufficient money in the bridge account tp complete the remaining structures that were considered necessary. During the year about a mile and ahalf of Skeet Road had been renewed from revenue, while portion of Ihaia Road had been tarred out of loan and some extension done from revenue, it was proposed to continue this as circumstances permitted. The Kahui Road, formerly in a bad state, had been declared a highway and had been greatly improved. Watino Road and Patiki Road had been renovated out of revenue. Loans had been raised to metal Okahu Road, and this portion was very much improved. Work on the main road near- Warea was nearing completion, and generally the roads in the county were in pretty good order. The roads in Opua riding were not quite so good, but they were better than they were 12 months ago. If the recommendations of the works committee were carried out the roads in another 12 months’ time would show still further improvement. Cr. Collins said that he had never seen the roads in ’better order. The chairman thanked the councillors for the assistance they had given him during the year.
