MORE DAIRY PRODUCTION

FAT INCREASE 2.07 PER CENT. AVERAGE GRADE POINTS HIGHER. REVIEW OF PAST NINE MONTHS. The production of butter showed an increase of 157 tons and cheese an increase of 4305 tons for the nine months ended April 30, in comparison with the corresponding period of 192030, despite rather unfortunate conditions, stated the Minister of Labour, the Hon. S- G. Smith, at New Plymouth yesterday. On a butter-fat basis the increase for the season to April 30 was 2.07 per cent. In the nine months to- April 30, 90,265 tons of butter were produced as compared with 90,108 tons in 1929-30, •while 83,364 tons of cheese were produced in the period up to April 30 as compared with 79,059 tons in the 192930 season. During the same periods the quantity of butter and cheese graded at the ports of New Plymouth and Patea and. the percentages of finest and first grades were; —

The average grade points for butter for the year ended March 31, 1931, 'vere 93.10 and for the previous year 92.96. The average grade points for cheese for the year ended March . 31, 1931, were 91.55* and for the previous year 91.77. The average dairy cow production was 218.051 b. of butter-fat in the 192930 season, 210.841 b. in the previous sea; sen, and only 151.61 b. twelve years ago.
