OKATO NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Favoured with a fine day on June 3 the tramp. to the Kahui Hut by mem-, hers of the Young Peoples’ Club, proved a most successful and enjoyable outing. With club members and their friends there were about 70 present. Leaving at 9 a.m., the party, with the Rev. Sinclair in charge, reached the hut about midday, when lunch was taken. Some of the more energetic members climbed to the snowline, the party returning about 5 p.m. The Kahui track is not in a very good state of repair, the rain having worn the pathway severely in places while the “corduroy” at the lower end is badly rotted. The severe frosts of the last week have ripped back the growth, and pastures are now wearing their winter garb. Several farmers are feeding hay and. ensilage to their cattle, while rot has takeu a very heavy toll of swede this year, even the late-sown swede crops are being eaten off. Dry crops being affected. A number of farmers reporting a loss of oi’er half of the roots.

The contractor for the Carrington Road metalling has commenced hauling the boulders. After a delay of two months, the heavy timbers have arrived for the Mangatete bridge. As the top portion is ready cut and painted, the erection should proceed expeditiously. .iu is rarely that a larger crowd has gathered for an Okato card evening than that present at the Hall on Saturday night. The ladies’ prize, donated ■by Mrs° A. D. Gray, was won by Miss N. Sharp, while Mr. 11. T. Paul was tho successful man. The “travelling 'prizes” were gained by Mrs. A. D. Gray and Mr. L. Johnston. The Ladies’ Guild provided supper. There was a good attendance at the Okato rifle range on Saturday, when members of the club had the first shoot for the club cup. The ranges were 3do and 500 yards, and though the weather was not favourable to good shooting some good, scores were registered. The leaders were Rfm. C. J. and R. Benton with a score of 92. The final will be fired on Saturday next.
