COMPETITIVE CLASSES

COMMENTS BY THE JUDGES. The photographic classes were much the same as in past years, though from a photographic poiut of view the amateurs did not appear to be making very much progress, said the judge, Mr. J. R. Wall. The photographic classes as a whole were well set out; nevertheless some of the amateurs seemed as if they could do with a few words of advice. The /subjects were good but in some cases there was a lack of finish. In the sketching and painting classes on the other hand there was a very good standard, continued Mr. Wall. Some of the sketches were very clever and it was noticeable that some of the most outstanding were by young people. Some of the colour work was very good. Although he did not think there had been any ham and bacon section during the past two years, the judge, Mr. R. Gadd, expressed surprise that the section was so small. The exhibit that was awarded first place was smoked excellently and was very well cut. the cost the answer must be “The speed is not worth the risk. ’
