TARANAKI BRICKS AND TILES.

A PROMISING INDUSTRY. A promising young Taranaki industry that one does not hear a great deal about is that of the Taranaki Brick, Tile and Drainpipe Co., Ltd., which has works at Waitara. Apart from the fact that the articles the firm manufactures are worth using, there are the economic advantages that accrue from any support accorded by Taranaki residents to the manufacture of Taranaki brickware. Money circulates in this locality and unemployment is relieved. The management, however, does not rely on sentiment to provide them with business. There are many uses their products can be put to with a distinct gain to the user. The farmer with an open drain, which needs perpetual work and expense to keep clean and into which stock are always liable to fall, can cut maintenance to a minimum. All that is necessary is to pipe it with field tiles. Those made in Taranaki are cheaper and better than any other draining material, and have the approval of the Department of Agriculture. But field tiles are not the only articles manufactured at Waitara. All kinds of drain-pipes, connections and plumbers’ requirements to be seen at the company’s stall are produced. Chimney-pots and flotver-pote, gutter tiles, salt-lick pans, glazed or unglazed ware, are all- included. It should not be forgotten that an excellent brand of brick can bo made from i the clay obtainable at Waitara, and is being extensively used. The company points out that £60,060 is being spent on New Plymouth’s new sewerage scheme, and adds tellingly that the majority of that can be kept in the district if residents will only demand Taranaki pipes and fittings.
