At the Turuturu-Mokai reserve 17 men have been found employment, while one man has been put on beautifying work at the railway station and two have been allocated the task of covering 200 pohutukawa trees planted on South Road. The work is necessary in view of the tender growth of these trees, which require protection from the severe weather and frosts during the winter months. In the Hawera county work has been found for 44 A class and 45 B class men, a total of 89. Other allocations are as follow': Ohawe Domain Board, two men; Tawhiti school committee, two; south committee of the Egmont National Park Board, eight; Normanby Town Board, 10; Te Roti school committee, four; Hawera hospital Board, two men. PATEA SCHOOL MANAGEMENT. CLEARING OF GROUNDS. The Patea. School Committee on Friday received the works committee's report that a concrete path about 25 yards in length had been completed from) the avenue to the dental clinic. A kerb crossing had been erected at the northern Egmont Street gate. The secretary reported the cost of the path was shared by the school and. the dental clinic committees. ' Full use of relief workers was being made-to bring the grounds into better order. The removal of useless shrubs and the trimming of others had made a vast improvement in the memorial avenue. Removal of weeds, rubbish, levelling and cleaning approaches to outbuildings and hedge trimming had been done. A programme of work for the forthcoming mouth was prepared. A football and basketball had been procured and were much appreciated. The headmaster (Mr. T. Aimstrong) submitted a report outlining the arrangements completed to have the classrooms heated prior to the children’s arrival each winter morning. There were 118 boys and 81 girls at present on the ro>l'l.

The parking of cans belonging to the teaching staff was discussed and unanimous objection to the use of the memorial avenue as a parking place was made. Alternative proposals for parking were held in abeyance pending alterations to gates and fences. 'Facilities for children to attend the Hawera show will be provided if sufficient children desire to attend. EGMONT-WANGANUI HUNT. OUTING AT WAVERLEY. Hounds met at the residence of Mr. P. Aiken, “Gowan Lea/” Waverley, on Saturday. There was a good attendance and riders enjoyed a keen afternoon’s sport. There were fewer spectators out that usual, but the day was very cold, and several long gullies prevent the ears from motoring to the best vantage spots. After throwing off from the homestead the hounds did not find for a considerable time. Hares had gone into close shelter from the cold, but when one was raised in the gully a good run ensued. Heading straight for the homestead, puss had the riders over several good fences before turning right-handed to the lane, ■turning sharply to the left to cross into the country opposite and here the rest of the afternoon was spent. Though no Jjill was made, hounds were on the move all the time ond a large area of country was hunted over. The fences were of a variety; plain wire, spars and gorse, ditch and bank were all taken in good style. The ground is much softer for landing now and there is a marked improvement in the jumping of all the horses.
