LOWER MANGOREI NEWS
The prevailing wind in May was south east, ranging from a light breeze to gale force. Rain fell on eight days, the total amount being 2.79 in. The fortnightly euchre and dance party was held on . Friday, 14 tables being used and 16 games played. Mrs. F. Morris and Mrs. Jordan won the ladies’ prizes and Mr. J. Candish won the men’s first after playing off with Mr. L. Candish. Mi*. R. Balsom won the second prize. The committee has decided to give a second prize in place of the usual consolation prize. Tickets were held for a seven-night aggregate prize, the six best tickets to be counted. The Lower Mangorei School team played their first match in the basketball competition against Egmont school on the Lower Mangorei grounds and were defeated by 4 goals to 3. The New Plymouth Girls’ High School preparatory team were met by Lower Mangorei on the High School grounds on June 4. The Mangorei girls were the victors, the score being 18_to nil. The Kent Road and Korito ladies’ sewing guild recently held its meeting at Mrs. Parker’s home. Sister Gill has promised to call and take parcels when ready. Sister Gill attended the meeting, bringing Mrs. Avery, secretary of the District Nurses’ Association, and Mrs. Clarke. These ladies gave particulars of the work done in New Plymouth for the relief of the needy and expressed pleasure at the results achieved by the guild. A half bolt of flannel from the National Council of Women and a supply of garments to be cut and remade from Sister Gill were accepted. The president has also purchased material. An offer received from the Korito school girls, through their teacher, Mr. Lopdell, to make bed covers and plain garments was accepted. Miss N. Langley is staying with Mrs. Simons. .
Mr. R. C. Staples left for Wellington on Wednesday.
