The Vancouver Board of Trade has telegraphed Mr. H. H. Stevens, Minister of Trade and Commerce, stating that the need for arranging a trade treaty with New Zealand is pressing, and urging that definite negotiations be launched before the end of the session of the House of Commons. “With your complete knowledge of the situation we feel we can rely upon you to press forward towards a new arrangement without delay/’ the telegram continued. The board also telegraphed the Montreal Chamber of Commerce urging it to suggest a national demand on the Government for treaty action at once. EXEMPTIONS ARRANGED CONCESSION TO IMPORTERS. NEW TARIFF ON CANADIAN GOODS By Talcgraph.—Press Association. Wellington, June 6. The Government has had under con.sideration the question as to .how goods should be dealt With which left Canada before the recent tariff alterations took effect. The Prime Minister stated that in the ordinary course tariff changes come into operation immediately on their announcement, but the recent changes are due to special circumstances, which warrant a departure from the . usual procedure. “Therefore,” he said, “it has been decided that all goods, the produce or manufacture of Canada ■which.were exported from that country for New Zealand before June 2, 1931, will be admitted ..at the rates of duty i; forceimmediately prior to that date. This, means that the new rates will not be charged on any Canadian goods now in bonded warehouses or which left Canada for New Zealand before June 2. If any duty has been overpaid it will be returned upon application to the Collector of Customs at the port at which the duty was paid.” ACTION IN NEW ZEALAND AUCKLAND FIRMS’ PROPOSALS. Bennett, that Australia is ready to proceed with the trade treaty, which will be tabled in Canberra and Ottawa simultaneously, probably on Monday.
