The prisoner was characterised by Chicago authorities as “the most dangerous man alive.’’ He was placed in a specially constructed cell in the St. Joseph gaol with two guards. A large number of crimes was charged against Burke, including half-a-dozen murders besides the St. Valentine Day massacre, and robberies totalling £200,000.
