BRITISH SUNSET AWAITED

LAND TAXES ANTICIPATED

“TRAP FOIR HOUSE OF LORDS”

TEST FOR THE LIBERALS

FORECAST BY NEWSPAPERS

British Wireless. Rugby, April 26. Mr. Philip Snowden, Who believes that this is his last Budget, says in the Sunday Press that he has risen from a sick bed with u superhuman effort, and has rejected all unorthodox schemes in the business arising from the Budget, concerning which there lias beeh much mystery. The Observer says that land taxes, no doubt, are deliberately designed to force a conclusion with the peers. Nothing is more certain than that the Ministers, aided by Mr. Lloyd George, are laying a trap for the Lords. Reynolds’ News, usually well informed on Government affairs, says that Mr. Snowden’s proposed tax is likely to operate on Thursday, and the division thereon will put the sincerity of the Liberals to the test, since a Government defeat will be followed by a general election, the dual issues being taxation of land monopoly and the abolition of the House of Lords.

MR. SNOWDEN' STILL UNDER CARE.

CABINET COUNCIL ATTENDED. British Wireless. Rec. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, April 24. The Chancellor of the Exchequer today returned to Downing Street for the first time since ; his long and painful illness. During the afternoon he attended a Cabinet council. He has made an excellent recovery but is still under medical care. As. a precautionary measure his two doctors will be present in the House of Commons on Mondav when he makes the annual Budget- statement. In order to prevent undue physical strain it is expected Ml. Snowden’s speech will be shorter than usual and will not last much more than an hour. He will probably curtail his references to the financial results of the past year, devoting most of his speech to revenue proposals.
