MANAIA UNEMPLOYMENT
MEN ON DIFFERENT WORKS. v SEVENTEEN ON LOCAL REGISTER, The recently formed unemployment committee combining Manaia town and Mauaia West '' County representatives has been functioning smoothly and work has been provided for the majority of those registering. The unemployment register totalled 17 up to February 24. Of these most of the men were desirous of heavy or farm work. Parties have been employed on county work and also in the Manaia cemetery. The men were under the supervision of the Waimate West County engineer. It is hoped to make a start on the work of clearing up the Manaia Domain in the near future. It is hoped to have schemes 2,4 a and 5 in full operation in the district shortly as certain information is expected in this connection from the Unemployment Commissioner in Wellington. The work at present being carried out in the cemetery, domain and county is under scheme No. 5. -
TE ROTI DISTRICT PICNIC. IDEAL DAY AT TE NGUTU. Ideal weather prevailed for the Te Roti School and settlers’ picnic at Te Ngutu on Friday. The park is an ideal spot for picnics and the caretaker, Mr. Revell, had the grounds in excellent condition but as another, picnic was being held, at the same time one party had to have the tables in the . open. Two motor-buses and a number of private cars conveyed about 150 Te Roti children and adults and a most enjoyable time was .spent. Fruit, sweets and soft drinks were distributed among the children and a toy was given to each child under five years. The committee thanked the ladies who had assisted with the lunch and afternoon'tea, and Mrs. Coleman and Messrs B-lair, Bennett and Sutton, and Hossborough for trophies. The committee consisted of Messrs J. Feron (chairman), M., Condon (secretary), C. Bloor, S. Bluett, R. Sharp, R. Lee, G. Morrison, R. Christianson, H. Cleaver, R. Clement and L.' Hitchcock. Results are:—

TE ROTI PERSONAL ITEMS Miss Dell Cleaver, Palmerston North, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. G. Cockerton. Mr. Robert Cockerton is visiting his parents. Mr. McAsey and Miss Jean McAsey have returned from a short visit to Mercer. MANAIA GENERAL ITEMS. The total amount of subscriptions collected for earthquake relief purposes at Manaia is £303 19s 9d up to February 23. Of this sum £lO has been paid to the ladies’ committee of Manaia and to Waimate West County towards providing materials or garments for the use of refugees.
