Thirty persons were drowned when the Chinese steamer Fooyuan struck a rock in the Kunlingtan rapid in the Yangtse Gorge. The vessel foundered blocking the narrow navigation channel 30 miles up the river.
The sister ship Yukiang that was standing by to rescue passengers was suddenly fired on by shore bandits Who prevented attempts at rescue by enfilading the panicked passengers aboard the sinking ship though 120 had been saved before the attack by "the bandits. t ;
