DISCOVERY’S PERIL IN GALE
dangerous submerged reefs.
MOUNTAINOUS POLAR COASTLINE. By Telegraph—Press Asia.—Copyright. Sydney, Feb. 25. A wireless from the Discovery states that the vessel, when passing the mountainous coastline of Macßobertson Land, in which the high-peaked ranges trend in a south-westerly direction, found that the floor of the neighbouring seas was extraordinarily uneven, shoaling from great depths to dangerous submerged reefs, requiring cautious navigation. A number of islets appeared. With a gale blowing, Captain MacKenzie decided on February 14 to head for the open sea through the snow and darkness, until daylight disclosed that the ship had miraculously traversed a course in which there were many grouded bergs, and reached the lee of these, 40 miles north of land. The vessel is now waiting for the gale to abate.
