SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGES

INJURY IN MOTOR COLLISION —. il NEW PLYMOUTH SCHOOL TEACHER SUIT AGAINST WAVERLEY MAN. £1250 general damages, and £242 special damages were awarded V. J. Hellvar, school teacher, New Plymouth, at the conclusion last night of a case that has occupied the attention of the Supreme Court at- Wanganui for the past three days. ‘ ■ The case was one in whicn Hellyar proceeded against. Herbert Alorrison, farmer, Waverley, for damages for physical injury in a collision between a motor-car driven hy defendant and a motor-cycle ridden by plain-, tiff. The collision occurred near Wavefley last Labour Day. Hellyar was sephysical injuries. He was 13 weeks in verely burned and sustained serious the Patea hospital, and the injuries resulted in permanent incapacity. A large number of witnesses were called, including _ a considerable amount of medical evidence. The judge and jury visited Waverley yesterday morning and viewed the scene of the accident. On their return to Wanganui further evidence was submitted for the defence, and the addresses of counsel and the judge’s summing up occupied the Court until 5.15 p.m., when the jury retired.' 7 ■

The judge submitted eight questions to the jury, all of which were returned in favour of the plaintiff. The verdict was £1250 general and £242 special damages in favour of plaintiff. ■ , Air.
