IMPORTS FROM AUSTRALIA
OPPOSITION TO DUMPING DUTY.
Considerable opposition is expressed m many quarters to the proposal of the Manufacturers’ Association to put a dumpting duty on Australian goods coming into New Zealand under the favourable exchange. .. . The firm of Speddmg, Limted, Auckland, in a letter whicli-refers to a resolution passed recently by the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association, in which the Government was urged to apply a dumpin" duty on all importations from Australia, without consideration of the articles concerned,- states that it appears as if the recommendations were made Olindly and without consideration of the “We ur"e, in the interests of the country generally,” state the writers “that a protest be lodged from Auckland against the action of the Manufacturers Association in Dunedin. It appears that they are attempting a Dominion-wide campaign without any consideration as to the results.” The firm contends that a dumping duty- such as the one proposed would result .in an increase in the cost of living for no good purpose.
