PRODUCE OF CANTERBURY

MORE LIFE IN GRAIN MARKET.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.

Christchurch, Last Night.

There is more interest in the grain and produce markets this week. A fair quantity of wheat is coming on to the market.. A big proportion ot it is pinched in condition and a much larger proportion than usual is fowl wheat or a grade below good fowl wheat. For fowl wheat the quotation has eased a little and to-day it is 5s f.o.b. sacks extra, while the lower grade has been sold at 4s 7d f.o>b, sacks extra. There is very little interest in milling wheat and buying is very restricted. One sale of Tuscai is reported at 5s 3d a bushel on trucks.

The oats market is very quiet. Algerians are quoted at Is lOd to 2s a bushel on trucks. A Gartons are worth 2s 3d a bushel on trucks to farmers and B's 2s.

The chaff market is weak at present and the quotation has 'eased to £4 7s 6d a ton f.o.b. sacks in.

The activity in the potato market is still sustained and a further slight increase has been recorded. Speculative business has raised the price to £4 10s a ton f.o.b. sacks in for April-May-June delivery, but it was not firm at that figure. This afternoon several sales for July-August-September delivery are reported at £5 a ton f.o.b. sacks in.

There has been considerable activity in onions during the last few weeks and a fair amount of speculative business. ■ Quoting on the f.o.b. sacks in values they are worth £4 10s to growers and are firm at that price. The small seeds section has shown some movement. The new crops have come on the market and in most cases in all sections except one the farmer is prepared to meet the market. The one exception is perennial ryegrass. Italian is quoted at Is 9d to 2s on trucks and the quotation for perennial is 2s to 2s 6d, with sellers’ ideas of values about 3s. The cocksfoot crop is coming on the market. The value of Akaroa cocksfoot is 3d to 3Jd for' 121 b. to 131 b. seed. Plains seed is worth about 2Jd to 3d, There was a very small carry-over of white clover from last year. The average value of the new seed, which ie of excellent quality, is 7d to 'pd and one or'two lots of extra good seed has exceeded this figure. This is the only section of the market that lias held last year’s value. There was a large carry-over of cowgrass and prospects for the marketing of the new crop are unpromising. The season has not 1 icn a good one for the seed, having been too dry.
