UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
WORK DONE IN NORTH TARANAKI.
The North Taranaki Unemployment Relief Committee held a meeting at New Plymouth yesterday. -Present: Messrs. P. E. Stainton (chairman), J. Brown, S. Flood, J. S. Connett and C. P. Smith. The Hon. S. G. Smith, Minister of Labour, and his secretary also attended. A scheme for the more rapid disposal of men applying each day at the labour bureau for work had been suggested by Mr. B. Thorne, said the chairman. About 100 men met at the office every morning, sometimes waiting from ,8 till 10, 11 and 12 o’clock. . The utmost despatch was used as far as the office was concerned but a system of classification of the men might enable each class to call at the office at a certain hour and be despatched in perhaps half ah hour.
The working of the system was explained by Mr. Thorne. It had operated successfully, he said, for 18 years in England. The chairman, the secretary and Mr. C. P. Smith were appointed a committee to consider the scheme and report to the next meeting of the committee.
The committee decided to allocate another £‘2s to the Opunake Unemployment Committee for work under the No. 2 scheme, making a total of £5O granted to the Opunake committee to date. Under the No. 2 scheme, said the chairman, the North Taranaki commit-
tee had expended £139 in New Plymouth and had so far made grants of £25 to Inglewood, Opunake and Waitara, leaving the North Taranaki committee still with £lOB in hand.
