STRATFORD SWIMMING CLUB

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. LEARNING WEEK ARRANGEMENTS. A profit of£B 16s S<l was made at the recent carnival by the Stratford Amateur Swimming Club and £5 will be donated to the Stratford earthquake relief fund. The club has decided in future to hold the club swims on Thursday afternoons at 4 p.m. instead of on Tuesday evenings. on account of the evenings this year - having been so cold. ' To date points scored by entrants in the club competitions are: —Ladies: Miss Nelson 4, Miss Wickham 3, Miss Thomson 2, Misses Hale and Villers 1 each. Men: H. Lonsdale 9, J. Davis 5, R. Watson. 5, A. Robson 4, R. Trueman 3, T. Verney 2, W. Verney, T. McCluggage and C. Galbraith 1 each.

With, a view to promoting the “learn to swini week’’ in Stratford, the president, of the club, Air. R. V. Kay, has conferred with the . secretary of the Taranaki Swimming Centre, Mr. Al. CJark, New Plymouth. The executive has decided to ask instructors to make themselves available, one each afternoon, from 3 to 4 o’clock from Monday till Friday. The instructors will be R. Watson (Monday),' V. J. Henderson (Tuesday), H. Lonsdale (Wednesday), V. J. Henderson (Thursday) and J. Gardener (Friday). As Thursday next is the day of the Stratford' school picnic and the baths will, be free of Stratford children, arrangements have been made for pupils of the Radnor and other outlying schools to be jn attendance at the baths. The week affords those children who cannot swim an excellent opportunity of learning and they should make a special effort to take advantage of the instruction.

Owing to his transfer .to Auckland the secretary, Mr. N, Johnson, has resigned. The club has accepted his resignation with regret and has appointed Mr. V. J. Henderson in his place.

GENERAL ITEMS. The making of an organised appeal by cards or otherwise will be considered at next meeting of the Stratford earthquake reljef committee for, although those who have subscribed already have given generously, the committee believes that there are many more people who would give were they approached. Air. W.' J. Polson/ ALP., states that because 1 tlie Government might have to raise a substantial loan, some citizens thought there was no further necessity for private donations. That was an erroneous impression. The sum required to rehabilitate the devastated area was so large that it would severely strain the resources of the whole country, let alone. those of the Government. •

The Avon bowling stars have changed hands and are now held by VV. Ewing, ■S. Ewing, Liddell and Harris (s), of the Stratford Bowling Club, who defeated the previous holders, Thompson, Lonsdale, Fletcher and J. Walker (s), of Avon, by 32 to. 10. The Stratford Farmers’ Union has sent ' subscription lists in connection with the earthquake relief fund to Midhirst, Cardiff, Ngaere, Toko, Huinga, Huiroa, ' Whangamomona, Douglas and Wharehuia. j ’ These districts are to be asked to set up committees where such a step has not already been taken. The Stratford earthquake relief committee has been notified that in future no Hawke’s Bay residents will be evacuated past Palmerston North, but gifts of clothing are still acceptable. Offers to assist the building up of the Stratford earthquake relief .funds have been received from the following and have’, been accepted by the committee provided, that that body is put to no expense and. that the promoters of functions undertake all organisation and responsibility. Mrs. Rear offered to organise a vaudeville show; . Mrs. Bird, to give the use of the Windsor Tearooms free of charge for a card party, she to provide/the supper free; Mr. • Davison offered the use of his orchestra free for any entertainments; the Westward Ho golf course offered the proceeds of a night or nights at the course; the Pipe Band and the Boys’ Band offered their services; Nga.ere, euchre party and dance; Toko, dance.. .... ■ > ■Following a suggestion that employees in Stratford might donate a day’s pay to the earthquake relief fund the Stratford committee will recommend that collections be made among the staffs of •business houses.

, Whereas 1200 people in Stratford subscribed . £864 for the relief of those who suffered as the result of the Murchison earthquake, to date 160 people have subscribed over £77o' to the present fund.

As a result of the decision of the Stratford earthquake relief committee, discretionary power has been given a sub-committee consisting of the Mayor, the Mayoress and- the 1 town clerk to assist necessitous refugees in Stratford. This motion was moved by Mr. J. VV. McMillan at last meeting. “It is ridiculous,” he said, “that the money subscribed in Stratford should be sent to Wellington and remittances made from that cijy for needs in Stratford.’’ A gay time is promised a.ll who attend the social and dance to be held in the Huinga Hall next Thursday. Proceeds go to the earthquake relief funds. Curd’s free bus will leave Stratford at 7.30 p.m. M. McDonald, land agent, Stratford, has a few good cheap farm properties for sale and lease on very easy terms.

KING’S THEATRE TALKIES.

"DISRAELI” MASTERPIECE. ' "I think Disraeli will find much favour with the public and greatly increase the prestige of pictures because it represents the finest traditions of literary craftsmanship,” says George Arliss, veteran stage star who plays the title role of this Warner Bros, picture which is playing at the King’s Theatre, finally to-night. Arliss, in addition to being one of the foremost character actors of the American and English stages, is an author of note. "The literary quality and the dramatic construction of ‘Disraeli’ are excellent,” he says. Joan Bennett, who plays the girl in the love romance that runs through the story, is a daughter of Richard Bennett, well-known actor, and was born in the United States. She studied and travelled extensively abroad and lived a year in London with the result that there is no glaring difference between her accent and that of the English.nlaJeis. " ~
