CAR LOADS OF FOOD.
‘WHERE ARE THE HEADS.”
A story is told by a Wellington man of a; big Maori, who arrived in Napier with- two others with provisions after the earthquake and asked for the “fellow that, run the earthquake.” It. happened outside • the medical surgery at Napier. There was a screeching of.'brakes-and some commotion outside, and the people at the surgery went out to see what'all the noise was about. A big ■ car, ; piled with goods, had pulled up, and in. it were three Maoris. One'of them/a big fellow, inquired: “Where are the' heads ?” He was asked whom he meant—-the police or the Naval officials. “No,” shouted the Maori, “I want the fellow that run the earthquake.” He forthwith produced a big placard with three or four'marks on it and the following words: “The Common Seal of the Maori Welfare Association. We come to help the pakeha brother.” . The Maoris had come from the country, no one seemed 'to know exactly where from, and their car was loaded with provisions. Their appearance on the scene and the manner of their coming was just another example of the wonderful spirit of the Maori race.
